The Riverland Community College baseball team responded in a big way in game two of Monday's doubleheader, using a five-run sixth inning to defeat Century College 8-5 and earn a split on the day.
Trailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Devils delivered their biggest offensive inning of the game. Freshman 1B Carson Gehrke (Oregon, WI) jumpstarted the rally with a two-run single to give Riverland the lead. Sophomore RF Jonathan Mora (Miami, FL) followed with an RBI single, and Sophomore CF Roland Figueroa (Ponce, PR) capped the inning with a two-run double to extend the advantage to 8-5.
Gehrke led the offensive effort, finishing with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Figueroa also drove in three runs, while Mora and Austin Swenson each collected two hits. Riverland totaled 11 hits in the contest, including four doubles.
Century built an early lead with two runs in the second inning and added two more in the fourth. The visitors tacked on another run in the sixth before Riverland's late surge.
On the mound, Sophomore LHP Melvin Ortiz (Lajas, PR) earned the win, tossing six innings while allowing five runs—just three earned—on six hits. Ortiz struck out seven and worked around five walks. Sophomore RHP Khalil Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) closed the door in the seventh inning to secure the save.
