Riverland Earns Day One Sweep Of Minnesota West

The Riverland Community College baseball team used a fast start and balanced effort to secure a 9-1 victory over Minnesota West on April 12, completing the doubleheader sweep.

Riverland wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for five runs in the top of the first inning to take immediate control. The Blue Devils continued to apply pressure throughout the game, adding runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.

The offense was fueled by a well-rounded attack, totaling 11 hits. Sophomore 2B Peyton Ransom (Austin, MN) led the way with three hits and two runs scored, while freshman SS Christiaan Koehler (Red Wing, MN) added two hits and an RBI. Freshman 1B Carson Gehrke (Oregon, WI), sophomore OF Roland Figueroa (Ponce, PR), and freshman utility Austin Swenson (Adams, MN) each contributed multiple RBIs, helping power the Blue Devils' nine-run performance.

On the mound, sophomore LHP Melvin Ortiz (Lajas, PR) earned the win, allowing just one run on one hit over four innings. Sophomore RHP Khalil Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) was dominant in relief, striking out five over two scoreless innings, and freshman RHP Justin Joriman (Roseville, MN) closed out the game with a scoreless seventh.

Minnesota West was limited to just three hits on the day as Riverland pitching controlled the game from start to finish.
