Blue Devils Grab Conference Shutout over Lake Superior College

Blue Devils Grab Conference Shutout over Lake Superior College

On a hot Sunday afternoon, Riverland welcomed Lake Superior to Austin for the second conference game between the foes in 2024. And just as they did a few weeks ago in Duluth, the Blue Devils came out winners. This time, it was a 2-0 shutout for Riverland, marking the team's first shutout of the season.

Riverland controlled play for much of the game, as a tired Ice Hawks team, who had played an away game in Alexandria against Alexandria Tech the day before, worked hard to get into the game. Riverland got the first goal of the match when defender Abdoul Mohamman headed in from a free kick by Ansumana Jammeh in the 18th minute. The Blue Devils continued to knock on the door, but they just couldn't find the net again in the first half.

A second goal came from attacker Nick Asmus, as he stole a ball from an Ice Hawks defender at the top of the Lake Superior 18-yard-box and drove in one-on-one against the keeper, slotting it past him for a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute. Riverland continued to pepper the Lake Superior goal, but the Ice Hawks goalkeeper made a string of fine saves to keep the score close.

In the end, Riverland came out 2-0 winners, running their conference record to 3-1-1 and their overall record to 4-2-2. The Blue Devils head to the Twin Cities on Wednesday afternoon for a second meeting with Anoka-Ramsey Community College. The Blue Devils beat the Rams in Austin a few weeks ago, 2-1, and will be hoping for another good result Wednesday.
