Riverland Community College used a balanced offensive attack and a decisive late surge to defeat Minnesota North College-Hibbing 19-8 on March 21.
The Blue Devils scored early with two runs in the second inning and added two more in the fifth before regaining momentum in the sixth with a four-run frame. After Hibbing battled back to take the lead midway through the game, Riverland responded and kept the pressure on heading into the final innings.
Holding a narrow advantage late, Riverland broke the game open in the ninth inning, erupting for 11 runs to secure the victory.
Riverland finished with 15 hits on the day, with multiple players contributing across the lineup. Sophomore outfielder Roland Figueroa (Ponce, PR) led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Freshman outfielder Hideki Ohira added two hits and three RBIs. Freshman catcher Ethan Mott (Rockford, IL) and freshman Shortstop Christiaan Koehler (Red Wing, MN) each drove in three runs, and Sophomore 2B Raul Martinez (Santa Isabel, PR) chipped in two hits and two RBIs at the top of the order.
Freshman utility Austin Swenson (Adams, MN) reached base four times and drove in two runs, while sophomore outfielder Jonathan Mora (Miami, FL) added two hits and scored three runs.
On the mound, Sophomore pitcher Khalil Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) earned the win with a complete-game effort, striking out 12 over nine innings.
